Numerous studies are underway to try to answer the question as to whether green cleaning is necessary but you can be the judge for your family.

I’ve mentioned in earlier posts that your skin is the largest organ your body has and that toxins can easily be absorbed through it

You also introduce toxins to your body when you breathe them.

Do you or does any family member cough when a certain cleaner is used? Does anyone in your household experience trouble breathing when a room is entered immediately after it’s cleaned? Do your clothes ever leave you with a rash or itching after they’ve been washed?

If you can answer yes to even one of the above questions, you may have experienced a sensitivity to the cleaner that was used.

Some of the products you use on a regular basis might be:

  • Laundry Soap
  • Dishwashing Soap
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Bathroom Cleaners
  • Wood Cleaners
  • Metal Cleaners
  • Makeup
  • Deodorant/Antiperspirant
  • Soap
  • Sun Screen
  • Toothpaste
  • Body Lotion

Many, if not all, of the above products may introduce chemicals that your body MUST expel in order to maintain optimal health.

Some of the studies that are currently under way are trying to determine what, if any role household cleaners play in asthma and ADHD. Other studies are examining whether the aluminum that’s an ingredient in many deodorants plays a role in Alzheimer’s.

Sunscreen and sun blocks are also a concern BUT their usefulness in preventing burns that may help skin cancer start later in life outweighs the risk from the chemicals.

Natural cleaning products are desired by many but aren’t used as much as they could be. One reason more consumers haven’t switched to these green cleaning products is the price is often quite a bit higher than their chemically laced counterparts.

This price differential is fading as the consumer demand increases BUT some of the offerings are only slightly better than their chemically loaded counterparts. The government does NOT require a product to be all natural to be considered green so it is up to you to read the label of EACH product.

There are companies like Shaklee, USANA and others that offer all natural products but many consumers refuse to consider their products because the companies have a business opportunity associated with them.

Basic H is a natural all purpose cleaner that was introduced in the 1960’s by Shaklee. This concentrated cleaner has been made even more concentrated and it is now called Basic H 2 Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate. A 16oz. bottle of this new concentrated Basic H 2 will cost you $12.15 as a retail customer BUT it takes 2 DROPS of this cleaner to make 16 ounces of glass cleaner. That level of concentration works out to about 48 gallons of cleaner from one bottle.

The above example showed you can buy an all natural product that lets you make a huge amount of cleaner that will save you money, will help you keep plastic bottles out of the landfills AND will let you affordably do your green cleaning while feeling good about it.
