Normal Cholesterol Levels and You

Many adults in America and throughout the world are becoming more aware of their cholesterol and the need to seek normal cholesterol levels for optimal health.

As more people of all ages become overweight, the need to know your cholesterol increases as does your need to modify your diet and exercise regime to try to get to the normal blood cholesterol level.

The reason this is such an important issue is the fact that the results of having the LDL levels too high, the HDL levels too low and Triglyceride levels too high could result in heart disease.

Normal Cholesterol Level

Many medical professionals agree that the total cholesterol level needs to be at or below 200mg/dl to be considered normal. If you fall into this range, most medical practitioners believe your risk level for heart disease is quite low.

Achieving and maintaining this optimal level is an extremely difficult, if not impossible, goal for you if your diet is heavy in saturated fats plus other unhealthy foods and you live a sedentary lifestyle.

Your heart disease risk level is considered high when your total blood cholesterol level is 240 mg/dl or greater. A level between 200 and 240 mg/dl would have the medical professionals classifying you as moderately at risk for heart disease which means your risk is still double that of anyone with a level of 200 mg/dl or less.

If you are in the moderate or high risk category, you should work with your medical advisor to plan a course of action to reduce the level.

You will need to change your lifestyle by changing to a healthier diet, exercising more or possibly including medications that are prescribed for you.

HDL the Good Cholesterol

If you are an averaged sized man, your HDL level should be between 40 and 50 mg/dl and if you are an average sized woman should have an HDL level between 50 and 60 mg/dl. Smoking, obesity and a lack of exercise all adversely affect your HDL just like an unhealthy diet does.

Your lifestyle and genetics play a large role where your current cholesterol level is. You have a certain amount of control over your lifestyle so you can take an active part in working to get the normal cholesterol levels you are seeking or working to keep.
