Planters Warts: The Cause
As we’ve discussed in other posts, planters warts can be quite painful. This article discusses the cause, places the virus may spread and ways you can help prevent the spread of this problem.
Planters warts are caused by the human papilloma virus which is commonly referred to as (HPV). HPV usually enters the body through breaks in the skin. These can be simple cracks or open sores.
Spreading HPV from one part of your body to another or from one person to another is amazingly easy but not everyone will immediately get warts. Some of the ways you can spread HPV are:
-
Walking barefoot in public places such as locker rooms at your local gym, public swimming pool, country club or shower.
-
Sharing personal care items such as razors, towels, shoes or socks might allow the it to be spread.
-
Touching an infected area on yourself or another then touching yourself or someone else may pass it to the new location.
Just because you may come in contact with the virus doesn’t mean you will get a wart or planters warts on first contact.
Preventing planters warts and other warts is part common sense, part courtesy and part luck:
-
The first line of defense is proper nutrition. Good nutrition means healthy skin and a healthy immune system.
-
Proper hydration. If you are properly hydrated, your skin is less prone to cracks that will give it easy access to your body.
-
Wear flip flops in public areas such as locker rooms, gym changing areas, etc.
-
Wear flip flops in your own shower if you or your partner has warts.
-
Use a different towel to dry areas of your body that has planters warts from the rest of your body or save the wart infected areas until last for drying.
-
If you sweat heavily, either wear moisture absorbent socks or change socks frequently so your feet stay as dry as possible.
-
Wear different shoes each day so the shoes have a chance to dry out.
-
Try not to touch your warts then another area of your body or anyone else until you’ve washed.
-
Do NOT share personal care items such as towels, wash cloths, razors, shoes or socks with someone else. The person you are sharing these items with may be carrying it but not have any visible warts.
-
Try not to irritate or damage you skin because this gives it easier access to your body and once in it can start reproducing to create warts.
Once human papilloma virus enters your body, it may take several weeks for it to reproduce enough to create planters warts.
