Skin Care Tips for the Winter

The colder days of winter are just about here, and often along with the cooler weather come a change in the skin. In fact, many people end up dealing with skin that is dry during the winter. Although some only deal with mildly dry skin, others end up dealing with nasty problems that end up in cracking skin, flaking, itching, and more. Taking care of your skin during the winter is definitely important so you can work to avoid these problems with dryer winter skin. Here are four tips that can make a big difference.

Top Acne Treatment

Tip #1 – Start Moisturizing More than Usual – One of the most important skin care tips for the winter months is to start moisturizing more than usual. Sure, moisturizing once a day was great during the summer, but now you’ll want to moisturize a couple times a day. Moisturizers that are full of oils that won’t clog skin, such as mineral oil, almond oil, and primrose oil, are excellent choices. These oils help to protect the face and won’t clog up your pores causing more acne.

Tip #2 – Wear Plenty of Sunscreen – Most people have the idea that sunscreen is only something they need to worry about during the summer months. This is absolutely not true. You also need to make sure that you are wearing plenty of sunscreen during the winter months as well. The winter sun can be harsh and when you combine that with the glare off of the snow, you can still deal with skin damage. So, before you go outside, make sure that you are putting sunscreen on skin that is going to be exposed to the sun.

Tip #3 – Purchase a Humidifier – Since you are running the heat in your home during the winter months, the air in your home tends to be quite dry. So, to keep your skin healthy and from getting too dry, purchasing a humidifier for your home is an excellent idea. Actually, it’s better to purchase a couple different smaller humidifiers to use in your home rather than one large one. This helps to make sure that moisture is dispersed throughout your entire home.

Acne Treatment

Tip #4 – Avoid Baths and Showers that are Too Hot – Last of all, during the winter months, you should be avoiding baths and showers that are too hot. Showers that are too hot can actually break down special barriers that are in your skin, which dries out your skin. Go with showers and baths that are merely warm, and you should spend less time in the water as well during the winter time.

(This guest author does a good job of pointing out that winter provides special challenges in caring for your skin during winter.)

Understanding Treatment For Acne

Treatment for Acne

Acne is a skin disease that affects many people today. People think that acne affects only teenagers but this just isn’t so. Acne plays no favorites and it can strike even adults who may have thought they were way past an acne outbreak. The causes of this skin problem are many but it involves inflammation of hair follicles and oil producing glands that are present in the skin.

Body Acne Treatment

Because acne usually appears on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders, it is almost always noticeable and hard to keep concealed. Its appearance at the most inopportune times are one of the reasons teens and young adults dread looking in the mirror. This disease unfortunately is at its worst during adolescence or teen years. Researchers believe that hormones play a large part as to why it is during this time that acne makes its appearance. Some also say that acne can be hereditary so if your mom and dad suffered with acne, chances are you may too. Teenagers who have acne don’t really care about how or why it happened they just want to know how to get rid of it. There are millions of people who would love to get that magic silver bullet that just blasts acne away forever.

Acne Remedy

Mild acne may be treated with over the counter medications as well as with frequent skin washing and good skin care. You don’t want to pick at your acne because this can lead to scarring and skin infections. Even if the zits are annoying, leave them alone and they will go away faster. Some people use compresses and leave these in place on acne-affected areas for 15-30 minutes. They use compresses 3-4 times a day. The compresses can be made from clean cotton pads that have had a little witch hazel applied. You can even use lavender oil on the compress. These natural herbs are often very helpful in diminishing the zits of acne.

If treatment at home is not effective or you have severe acne, you may want to contact a dermatologist. Dermatologist treatments can range from an oral antibiotic or topical cream to hormonal treatments. Some prescribed medications can be very effective but carry serious side effects. Another treatment method can be found with the small handheld electronic devices that are available. These are battery operated and deliver a tiny current to the acne zit that will kill the bacteria and clear up the infection in 24-48 hours. These devices cost about $100 but they do work.

Sometimes it doesn’t seem fair that you wash and scrub your face a thousand times a day and still seem to have acne popping up almost in front of your eyes. One of the things that you can do to get your acne zapped into submission is to use one of the little hand held electronic units that are made for acne sufferers. These are a bit expensive but they are so worth it. They work by using a battery to deliver a tiny electrical current to the pimples on your face. This kills the bacteria and clears each pimple in 1-2 days.

You can also use some easy and simple remedies at home that are good for your skin and will help control the acne. These home remedies for acne will also soothe inflamed skin, and help you distress. Some people like to use steam before they wash their face. The steam will help open the pores and this allows you to give a gentle and thorough washing to your face.

Just cut the hot water on in your bathroom sink and lean your face over so the steam is able to reach it. Trap the steam by covering your head with a thick towel. Do this for about 5-10 minutes and then wash your face as usual. Splash your face with cold water after washing and feel how nice and soft your skin feels. You can do steam treatments about 3-4 times a week.

You can also use green tea as a poultice for your face. Brew a pot of strong green tea. If you are using tea bags Use 3 teabags and 1 cup of water. Allow it to cool down and then wet a clean facecloth with the tea. Let the cloth rest on your face for 15 -20 minutes and then splash cool water on your face for a minute or two. Your face will feel refreshed and the green tea has some anti-inflammatory properties so you should notice less redness to the reddened areas.

Adult Acne – What Did We Do To Deserve Aging Skin AND Acne?

Adult acne and aging skin feel like curses to those of us that suffered through seemingly endless bouts of visible acne outbreaks from puberty to adulthood.

I’ll bet you were told that you’d grow out of it. It’s also a safe bet that you weren’t told that adult acne even exists or was a real possibility.

Did you feel like every zit on your face was the focal point of every conversation when you were in a group OR even when you were talking one-on-one? You weren’t alone and I’m willing to bet you have tried just about every lotion, potion and gimmick mankind has created and experienced varying degrees of success.

I’m sure you thoroughly enjoyed the rare treats that were called clear skin because you knew they wouldn’t last very long.

Your arrival in adulthood must have brought you extreme joy because of the clear skin you enjoyed. Your joy didn’t last as long as you’d hoped though did it?

I’m betting it was an unhappy surprise when you found out that hormonal fluctuations are the most common cause of adult acne, followed by stress, which in itself actually triggers hormonal imbalances, especially in women. So basically, any way you cut it, adult acne is primarily caused by hormonal shifts and fluctuations, many times caused by stress, but also caused by diet, lifestyle changes, birth control pills, medications, pregnancy, and more.

Many of the acne creams, lotions and potions that helped when you were a teenager are probably making your growing list if skin problems lengthen even further.

Good hygiene is your first step in helping reduce the amount of stuff on your skin that can help clog pores. Eating a balanced diet that includes enough protein, little or no refined sugar products (which cause hormones to spike up and down rapidly), and plenty of skin-nourishing fruits and vegetables is an absolute must for clear, healthy skin.

You are what you eat especially when it comes to your skin.

Actively participate in aerobic activities such as walking to help reduce stress. Meditation, yoga or tai-chi are other activities that you can engage in for stress reduction.

There are new and advanced acne treatments really offer you what no prescription antibiotic can in that they are completely safe, contain all natural botanicals that purify the skin from the inside out and, in many cases, can clear your skin permanently with very little follow up treatment if you take them as prescribed and for a long enough period to have lasting effects.

You’ve done nothing to deserve adult acne and aging skin except live and not pay as much attention to your health, exercise and skin care as you should have but those can be fixed.

What Is Your Skin Type?

The need to know your skin type cannot be overstated because your skin type determines what products you need for skin care and how much acne may affect you.

Ask yourself the following questions and be honest with the answers:

How often do you have acne breakouts?
Do you get blackheads?
How does your skin look and feel after you wash it with soap and water?
Do you have facial lines and wrinkles that are hard to clean?

These questions and the answers to them will give you a certain amount of knowledge about the type of skin you have and which products may work best for you.

The three basic skin types are normal, dry and oily BUT few people have a skin type that falls into a single group.

Your skin might be a combination of normal to oily or oily to dry. Regardless of your skin type, you will probably be able to find a product that fits your needs.

Each skin type has its own characteristics. The texture, oil production by the body and the frequency of acne breakouts vary with each type.

Dry skin does not promote acne breakouts or blackheads. Excess oil promotes acne breakout and blackheads are cause by oil and people with dry skin do NOT have excess oil.

Dry skin has a lot of nearly visible pores and might feel dry and tight after washing. The people with this skin type are often fair skinned, easily get sunburns and develop wrinkles earlier in life than other skin types.

People with normal skin types have occasional pimple breakouts and may have blackheads mostly in the t-zone the area on either side of the nose and on the forehead. With this skin type, the pores often appear visible in the t-zone and the skin may feel tight after washing but it will soon become comfortable once the body fills the t-zone with oil.

Normal skin types frequently have fair to medium skin and lines that may appear early but mostly around the eyes. Sun exposure often results in burns then tans.

Oily skinned people are the ones that have the most acne breakouts and blackheads. After washing, the pores are often enlarged and the skin might be oily with the forehead and nose becoming shiny in a short period of time.

People with oily skin usually have dark or olive tinted skin. The skin oil helps preserve the skin so facial lines are either few or happen later in life. Sunburns are rare but tans are easily acquired with the oily skin type.

The acne product or the skin care product you choose is greatly influenced by the skin type you are.
