Joseph Pilates was working as a nurse during World War I and he created this low impact exercise method to help the solders that were wounded or bedridden to regain their strength and health doing exercises using bed springs.
Pilates brought his exercise program to New York after the war and athletes and dancers that wished to increase their strength without increasing their bulk started using his workouts.

Mari Winsor was a licensed pilates trainer and she believed she could improve upon Joseph Pilates creation. Her goal was to expand the firming and toning of the muscles into a workout that helped the person lose weight too.
